Inpatient Antibiotic Use
The Standardized Antimicrobial Administration Ratio (SAAR) is a risk-adjusted summary measure of antimicrobial use available to acute care hospitals participating in the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) Antimicrobial Use (AU) Option. Hospitals can use the SAAR to track AU, compare their AU to a national benchmark, and assess the impact of interventions aimed at improving prescribing practices. SAARs included in this page use the 2023 baseline.

- The National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) Antimicrobial Use (AU) Option Report summarizes data reported to NHSN for adult, pediatric, and neonatal data.
- Only patient care locations reporting 9 months or more were included in analyses. Analyses were limited to SAAR locations reporting from eligible facility types.
- Eligible adult: any critical access, children's, general acute care, military, oncology, orthopedic, psychiatric, surgical, veteran affairs, women's or women and children's facilities actively participating in NHSN, with a recent annual hospital survey and at least one active adult SAAR location mapped in NHSN to that facility.
- Eligible pediatric: any children's, general acute care, military or women and children's facilities actively participating in NHSN, with a recent annual hospital survey and at least one active pediatric SAAR location mapped in NHSN to that facility.
- Eligible neonatal: any children's, general acute care, military, surgical, women's or women and children's facilities actively participating in NHSN, with a recent annual hospital survey and at least one active neonatal SAAR location mapped in NHSN to that facility.

- Broad Spectrum Hospital-Onset - Broad spectrum antibacterial agents predominantly used for hospital-onset infections
- Broad Spectrum Community-Acquired - Broad spectrum antibacterial agents predominantly used for community-acquired infections
- Gram-Positive - Antibacterial agents predominantly used for resistant gram-positive infections (e.g., MRSA)
- Narrow Spectrum Beta-Lactam - Narrow spectrum beta-lactam agents
- Clostridioides difficile - Antibacterial agents posing the highest risk for CDI
- Antifungal - Antifungal agents predominantly used for invasive candidiasis
