Healthcare-Associated Infections - Community Interface Activity (HAIC) Data Added to AR&PSP

CDC's Emerging Infections Program (EIP) Healthcare-Associated Infections - Community Interface Activity (HAIC) engages a network of state health departments and their academic medical center partners to help answer critical questions about healthcare-associated infection (HAI) threats and antibiotic resistance in the United States. Data from the EIP HAIC network are used to measure the burden of infections in the population, characterize pathogen strains associated with disease, and monitor trends in disease over time. Data from EIP will be featured on AR&PSP starting in May 2022, beginning with Clostridioides difficile infections (CDI). CDI is the leading cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and one of the most common healthcare-associated infections in the United States. The EIP HAIC CDI surveillance program was launched in 2009 in 7 EIP sites. Since 2011, EIP HAIC CDI surveillance has operated in selected counties in 10 EIP sites across the United States. The EIP HAIC CDI surveillance program provides an infrastructure for further public health research, including special studies aimed at identifying risk factors for C. difficile disease, populations to prioritize for vaccines, and monitoring effectiveness of prevention strategies.

As seen here, and found in the EIP C. difficile Infections profile, the crude rate of community-associated CDI in the EIP HAIC catchment areas overall increased from 2011 through 2019 with minor year-to-year variations. In contrast, the crude rate of healthcare-associated CDI showed an overall decrease from 2011 through 2019.

In the future, additional pathogen-specific data from EIP HAIC will be added to AR&PSP.
